Sarah Hesketh is a writer, artist and editor. She is the author of the poetry collections Napoleon’s Travelling Bookshelf (Penned in the Margins, 2009) and The Hard Word Box (Penned in the Margins, 2014), and the editor of The Emma Press Anthology of Age (2015). She has been an Artist in Residence with Age Concern and The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust. Her work has a focus on socially engaged writing practices that draw on ideas of portraiture and oral history, and an interest in hybrid and text-based cross-arts.
This is an excerpt from a work entitled ‘my little flicker’. The images are my photographs of drawings produced by my 2 year old using her bath crayons. The text is a poem I created via a number substitution system that replaces the dates of my menstrual cycle over 20 years with words from Sylvia Plath’s ‘Poppies in July.’
