A sentence or a couple of words, written down half awake in my phone, are extremely important in the moment.
As I work, by drawing and rewriting, the significance of the jotted down phrase reveals itself to me. These phrases are reflections on love, life and loss. It is a romanticism of the every day. I am a detective discovering the magic in the mundane, uncovering the quiet moments that shout with love. These findings are layered within strange characters, repeated patterns and wobbly shapes. As I compose my image, the blank canvas is set with a cast of characters that say things I am far too cowardly to say out loud. It is my visual diary, and I would love for you to delve into it.
To create my work I use Procreate on my iPad and layer hand drawn textures that have been photographed or scanned in. I use geometric shapes, pieces of intimate writing and expressive mark making to assemble my compositions. Different symbols and phrases repeat themselves within each series – a spider will represent me, a crowd my anxiety and the house with legs instability.
I have been a practicing artist for several years and am regularly commissioned for personal collections – I was chosen to be in the MA Select Show during my time at Camberwell, and have exhibited at Deptford Does Art and The London Illustration Fair.
