Using color pencil and encaustic, I create works that contrast realism alongside abstract representations of the body. These are metaphors of my experiences of womanhood, motherhood, love, loss, self-preservation, panic, desire, and knowing. Often I use orientation dissonance in my work, inversions which symbolize circumspection, surrender, gestation, and metamorphosis. I render my hands frequently, they represent my intention and action. I also paint the mouth tongue and teeth as gateways between inner self and outer world. Through taste and touch, I experience intimacy and desire. They create boundaries while also being entry points. Through my work, I invite you to experience this push and pull between entering and observing from a distance.
JP Morrison Lans holds a BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute, her work has exhibited internationally and across the US, and her drawing “Mermaid” is in the permanent collection of the Bundaberg Regional Gallery, Queensland, Australia. Morrison Lans work has been curated into exhibits with M.A. Doran Gallery, Tulsa, A.Hurd Gallery, Albuquerque, Keep Contemporary, Santa Fe, 19 Karen Queensland AU., Heron Arts, San Francisco and Field Projects, NYC., and she is an exhibiting member of the Teleportal.Gallery Artist Collective. Morrison Lans’ has created large-scale immersive installations for the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition, Living Arts Center, and AHHA Tulsa. She has been a selected resident artist with the School of Visual Arts, NY., Truro Art Center, MA., Rockland Woods, WA., Art Farm, NE, and The Vermont Studio Center. She and her child can typically be found experimenting with encaustic and play-doh, respectively, from their Tulsa, Oklahoma studio.
