The Secret Life of Color is part of a recent series titled “Flower Power”, started during the COVID19 pandemic. A reference to the flower power movement of the 1960s, flowers become emblems of feminine resistance. Mary employs an unapologetic neon-hued color palette as a rebuke, glowing vibrant as the world turns dark.
Mary Younkin(b. 1982, California) lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. She studied painting at California College of the Arts and received her MFA at Parsons The New School. Working between painting and collage, Mary’s practice examines ideas around feminine energy, creating a utopia from everyday objects and patterns. At the core of the work is an interest in leveraging color as a storytelling mechanism.
